I recognize that as a teacher I am held to a high standard at all times. I am a role model inside and outside the classroom. I am an important adult in students lives, and that does not end when I leave the school or when they leave my class. It is also important to remember that students are going to learn through observing you, more so than they are through listening to you. If you say one thing, but do another, students are going to recognize that. It is not enough to tell students to be polite and kind, to not interrupt, and to use their calm voice; you also have to demonstrate these things, and demonstrate them always. It was a learning curve for me and a challenge, not to vocally correct students while other students were talking, unless I was unable to hear. It does not set a good example if I am cutting off students, even if it is because another student is, I can always correct them silently or after their peer has finished their thought. Overall, standard 2 has made me become more cognizant of my behaviour inside and outside of the classroom, and has made me consider just how much influence I have as a teacher.
